Convergint has led and participated in several volunteer efforts over the years.

Convergint in the Community

Posted on

It's true — social responsibility is everyone's responsibility. While many people may agree with this general statement, saying it and doing it are two very different things. So when it comes to corporate responsibility, do you walk the walk? According to polling from the Society for Human Resource Management, the vast majority of Americans want the businesses that they patronize to take the lead in social and environmental causes that they support or are passionate about.

At Convergint, our mission is to make a daily difference in the lives of our customers, colleagues, families and communities. In short, Convergint cares — and we show that we care by creating a culture of service over self and principles over profits.

How does Convergint make a daily difference?
Before we laid the first brick or hired our first full-time colleague, Convergint was founded on a bedrock of core values and fundamental beliefs. Like the foundation of a building, Convergint was built upon unshakable value systems that we aim to bring to life in our everyday actions, including integrity, commitment, communication and accountability.

"We've celebrated Convergint Social Responsibility Day for over 20 years."

Perhaps the best manifestation of our deeply held values and beliefs is fully realized on Convergint Social Responsibility Day. Celebrated for 20 years now on the first Friday of each June, Convergint Social Responsibility Day is when our entire team rolls up its collective sleeves and goes to work in the surrounding community. Our service projects have benefited playgrounds, food banks, cafeterias, construction sites, health centers and more. From painting fences to donating blood to digging ditches, every service project has been our privilege to take part in, from Boston to Bakersfield.

There aren't just a handful of willing volunteers, either; it's a collective effort. For example, during our 18th annual Social Responsibility Day in 2019, nearly 2,900 Convergint colleagues and their families participated. These numbers allowed us to volunteer at nearly five dozen organizations located in 80 communities. In the process, Convergint offices and partners donated over $142,250 in technology combined for area schools and nonprofits.

Many hands make for light work and they also make for great work — in terms of overall production and contributions. Convergint and partners sorted 500,000 pounds of food, prepared 6,000 meals and donated over $1 million, all of which happened on Social Responsibility Day.

Beefing up school security with STEP Up
Convergint is also leveraging our resources and dedicating them to our Step Up initiative to make schools a better place, in part via extra hands on Social Responsibility Day. Short for Secure, Train, Educate and Protect, STEP Up is a campaign Convergint created that provides enhanced security services for underprivileged or underserved school districts. Regardless of where kids attend classes, school should be a sanctuary — one where they can feel confident that they're safe, protected and in an environment where they can learn and be inspired.

Unfortunately, children's safety has been compromised due to budget cuts, insufficient funding and obsolete security systems. Due to the prevalence of violence occurring at elementary, junior and high schools, an estimated 5% of students between the ages of 12 and 18 say they can't help but feel worried their lives may be endangered while on school grounds. According to a 2019 poll conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics, this compares to 3% who had similar concerns regarding their safety when away from school grounds.

We're so proud to say that through the STEP Up program — and our generous partners — we were recently able to provide approximately $100,000 of state-of-the-art security technologies to 17 schools in 10 cities. These included:

  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Charleston, South Carolina
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Cincinnati, Ohio
  • Denver, Colorado
  • Nashville, Tennessee
  • Orlando, Florida
  • Richmond, Virginia
  • San Antonio, Texas
  • Tulsa, Oklahoma

All of this was done in one 24-hour Social Responsibility Day, as our dedicated and enthusiastic staff installed the access panels, doors, intercom systems and surveillance cameras.

"Our commitment to giving back has taken us to schools, foster care centers and orphanages."

And that's just scratching the surface, as more recently, our commitment to giving back has taken us to schools, foster care centers and orphanages in Long Island, New York; Cincinnati, Ohio; Rapid City, South Dakota and Federal Way, Washington, among other cities.

As our CEO Ken Lochiatto notes: Where much is given, much is expected.

"We're in a position to step up and address these new and evolving challenges, and giving back is central to who we are as a company," Lochiatto said. "We are grateful that we can offer our experience, talents, and connections in our local communities."

As an industry-leading systems integrator, Convergint is committed to helping not just business become better, but society as well. Our work is for current and future generations. Together, simply by serving others, we can get there. This is one more reason that BranchServ Convergint is proud to be part of the Convergint nation.
